For decades, the Western Balkans have faced the challenge of young people moving abroad in search of better opportunities, driven by high unemployment rates and limited career prospects. The question is: What can be done to change this trend?
To find answers, the Regional Youth Cooperation Office (RYCO), with support from the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, is launching an exciting Research Mentorship Program!
This initiative offers young researchers the chance to dive deep into the root causes of brain drain and youth unemployment in the Western Balkans region, working alongside mentors, experts, and fellow researchers.
Through international collaboration, training and evidence-based research, participants will not only gain valuable skills but also contribute to solutions that could shape the future of youth in the region.

Eligibility and Selection criteria:
- A young researcher aged 18–29 from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo*, North Macedonia, Montenegro, or Serbia
- Currently studying in the field of Social Sciences (BA, MA, or PhD)
- Interested in becoming part of the RYCO Pool of Young Researchers after the project
- Able to work and communicate proficiently in English
- A passport holder of one of the WB6 Contracting Parties (CPs)
The program is more than just a research opportunity! By embracing this experience, selected candidates will have the chance to work under the mentorship of experienced Western Balkans colleagues currently living and working in Austria, visit Graz to explore research institutions and connect with experts, collaborate with fellow young researchers present your ideas and become part of the RYCO Pool of Young Researchers

- Proof that you are an active student at one of the WB6 universities
- Motivation Statement (max. 1 page, answering the following two questions):
- Why do you want to be part of this program, and what do you hope to gain or contribute?
- What draws you to the topic you selected, and how do you connect with it personally, academically, or professionally?
