This year’s contest is open to photographers from around the globe! Send three of your best-quality images that highlight the agri-food sector, along with a 150-word summary (in total, not of each photo) to provide context. Photos can depict the production, processing, distribution, or sale of food to end users. Keep in mind that pictures with one or two people in them are sometimes more attractive than photos that just show a crop.
Winning entries will be displayed in the November 2024 issue of The Marketplace magazine, and on our social channels.
Submissions will be accepted until August 16, 2024 at 5 pm EST. Submit images and the requested information to our application form.

Term
MEDA’s #MEDAField2Fork2024 Photo Contest begins May 1, 2024, and ends August 16 at 4:30 PM EDT. By submitting an entry, each contestant agrees to the rules of the contest and states that he or she is the age of majority in their jurisdiction as well as 18 years old or older.
Who may enter
This contest is open to all individuals worldwide who are at least 18 years old and the age of majority in their local jurisdiction (excluding individuals residing in Quebec, or individuals who reside in a jurisdiction where this contest in invalid under local law).
Current employees and contractors of Mennonite Economic Development Associates and any related entities, as well as their respective households or immediate family members are not eligible to enter. Compliance with the eligibility requirements will be determined solely by MEDA. All federal, provincial, and local laws and regulations apply. ENTRIES ARE VOID WHERE PROHIBITED OR RESTRICTED BY LAW.
Agreement to Photo Contest Rules
Participation in the contest constitutes the entrant’s full and unconditional agreement to these official rules and any decisions relating to the contest from MEDA, which are final and binding in all matters related to the contest. Winning is contingent upon fulfilling all requirements set forth herein.
What to enter
Send up to three images that highlight the agri-food sector, along with a 150-word summary (in total, not for each photo) to provide context. Photos can depict any part of the production, processing, or distribution and sale of food to end users. Preference may be given to photos that include one or two people in the shot.
Cropped photos are eligible. We do not accept digitally or otherwise enhanced or altered photos. Minor adjustments, including spotting, dodging, and burning, sharpening, contrast and slight color adjustment or the digital equivalents, are acceptable for all categories. If the judges determine that a photographer has altered his or her photo except for the expressly authorized changes above, they reserve the right to disqualify it.
For a photo in which a person is recognizable, the recognizable person must not be a minor and you must secure a model release from the subject and provide it to MEDA with your submission.
Submissions of this nature which do not include the model form of release, which you can open through the link provided in the preceding sentence, or that fail to meet a minimum 1-2MB picture resolution, will be disqualified.
Similarly, entrants whose photos depict other people’s work (such as sculptures, statues, paintings, and other copyrightable works) may need to obtain a release from the rights holder and provide it to MEDA upon request. When photographing the work of others, it must be as an object in its environment and not a full-frame close-up of another person’s creation.
To be eligible, your submission must be your original work and must not infringe or violate the rights of others. By entering the contest and submitting your submission, you represent and warrant that your submission is your original work and that you took the photograph submitted.
By submitting your submission, you further represent and warrant that your submission does not violate or infringe on another person’s rights, including, but not limited to, privacy, publicity, copyright, trademark, or other intellectual property right. MEDA shall determine the eligibility of your submission in its sole and absolute discretion.
By entering the contest and submitting an entry, in the event that one of your photos is selected as a winning photo, you grant MEDA a royalty-free, non-exclusive irrevocable license to publish your submission on Facebook and in connection with internal and external communications materials including but not limited to websites, magazines, advertising, and other promotional materials and to allow third parties to share your entry on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram and any other social media accounts determined appropriate by MEDA.
MEDA may use your submission in connection with internal and external communications materials including but not limited to websites, magazines, advertising, and other promotional materials. MEDA may use your submission in displays at events hosted by MEDA or in which MEDA is a participant.
Photos that contain sexually explicit, obscene, violent, or other objectionable or inappropriate content, as determined by MEDA in its sole discretion, are ineligible for this contest.
How to enter
Please submit up to three photographs and the requested information online at www.meda.org/f2fapply.
A photographer may submit no more than three photographs. Photographs must be submitted as jpeg files 1-2MB resolution minimum.
You must complete a separate form for each photo submitted. Incomplete entries, or those containing incorrect information, will be void. Proof of sending or submission will not be deemed to be proof of receipt by MEDA.
Works must be original for this contest. Photos must not previously have been published or offered for sale, in print or online.
We do not accept photographs submitted through the mail and do not accept more than three photos from any individual.
MEDA may collect a photograph’s metadata upon entry.
You as the photographer are the copyright holder and you retain your rights to your photograph.
For a photograph which wins a prize, you grant MEDA (and those authorized by MEDA) a royalty-free, world-wide, perpetual, non-exclusive license to publicly display, distribute, reproduce, and create derivative works of the entries, in whole or in part, in any media now existing or later developed, for any MEDA purpose, including, but not limited to, advertising and promotion of its website, exhibition, and products, including but not limited to MEDA publications.
By entering this contest and in consideration of being considered for a prize, for all photographs submitted by you, you grant MEDA (and those authorized by MEDA) a limited, non-commercial royalty-free, world-wide, non-exclusive license to publicly display, and reproduce, in whole or in part, in any media now existing or later developed, for any MEDA purpose, including, but not limited to, use and promotion of its website, exhibition, and MEDA publications.
Entry deadline
The contest begins on May 1, 2024, at 9:00 AM EST. All entries must be received at www.meda.org/f2fapply by August 16, 2024, at 4:30 PM EDT.
Judging
Photo entries will be judged by a panel of judges. Three judges will be appointed by the Marketplace editor from among MEDA staff or the Marketplace Reader’s Advisory Committee. The Marketplace editor will act as contest chair and also cast a deciding vote in the event of a tie for first, second or third rank. Judging will be based on creativity, quality, originality, and pertinence to the contest theme, agri-food market systems. Each element will be weighted equally by the judges. Judges will receive contestant photos, will score the submissions, rank their top three photos and submit them to the chair who will confidentially review results, cast deciding votes for first, second and third if needed in the event of a tie, and determine a winner. Scoring results and rankings will not be made public.
MEDA will notify the winner via the contact information provided at the time of entry. Winners will be notified by October 1st; after entry. MEDA may disqualify anyone who fails to respond to the notification within five business days. MEDA will then email and the selected entrant will be required to sign and return a declaration of eligibility and a liability/publicity release which
(i) confirms compliance with the Contest Rules
(ii) releases MEDA including the contest judges from any liability in connection with the Contest, the entrant’s participation therein,
(iii) grants to MEDA the right to use the entrant’s name and photo in any advertising relating to the Contest without further notice or compensation.

Prizes
The prizes will be awarded, as follows:
- 1st Prize: $500 USD
- 2nd Prize: $250 USD
- 3rd Prize: $100 USD
One cash prize per person. In order to receive a prize, winners must sign a release and license, as well as a declaration of eligibility, and will be responsible for paying any fees or taxes they may owe on a prize. Payment may be made in the method MEDA deems appropriate, with service charges paid by MEDA. Currency may be exchanged to local currency at MEDA’s discretion at the then-current exchange rate as determined by MEDA.
Winning entries may, at MEDA’s discretion, be displayed in the November 2024 issue of The Marketplace magazine, and on @medadotorg social channels, or in some other publication detailing this contest as MEDA determines.
Online Features
MEDA may select photos for highlight on its website or display in a publicly accessible contest archive; such selections will be made in MEDA’s sole discretion.
Conditions of Entry
By entering, all entrants agree(i) that these rules and this contest shall be interpreted under the laws of Ontario, Canada; (ii) any dispute related to this contest shall be resolved solely by the courts located in Ontario, Canada; and (iii) the entrant submits to the jurisdiction of the courts in Ontario, Canada for the resolution of any dispute related to this contest or these rules.
By entering, all entrants agree to hold MEDA and its respective agents, directors, officers, employees, and volunteers (the “Indemnified Parties”) harmless from and against all claims of any nature arising in connection with entrant’s participation in the contest and acceptance or use of a prize. The Indemnified Parties are not liable for any costs, damages, injuries, or other claims incurred as a result of entrants’ participation in the contest or winner’s acceptance and usage of a prize. The Indemnified Parties are not responsible for incomplete or misdirected entries, technical or network malfunctions or failures, or causes beyond their control. Entrants are solely responsible for their entries. Entrants may not submit materials that introduce any software viruses, worms or other programs designed to damage software, hardware or telecommunications equipment or are off-topic, partisan-political, contain advertising, nudity, personal attacks, or expletives, or is otherwise abusive, threatening, unlawful, harassing, discriminatory, libelous, obscene, false, sexually explicit, or that infringes on the rights of any third party.
The contest is void where prohibited or restricted by law. MEDA reserves the right to cancel the contest or modify these rules at its discretion. In the event of a dispute regarding the winners, MEDA reserves the right to award or not award the prizes in its sole discretion. MEDA reserves the right to disqualify any entrant whose entry or conduct appears in any way to: inhibit the enjoyment of others; tamper with the competition; violate these rules or other applicable law or regulation; infringe on the rights of third parties; or act in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner. Decisions of MEDA are final and binding.
Use of Data
MEDA will collect personal data about entrants including e-mail addresses associated with entries in accordance with its Privacy Policy. Please review the MEDA’s Privacy Policy at the following link: Privacy and Accountability – MEDA. By participating in the contest and providing your e-mail address, entrants hereby agree to MEDA’s collection and usage of their personal information and acknowledge that they have read and accepted MEDA’s Privacy Policy. Except where prohibited, you consent to MEDA’s use of your name in any list of winners (if applicable) and for promotional purposes in any media (including without limitation social channels and emails) without further payment or consideration. Any information you provide when you enter is provided to Sponsor, not to Facebook.
General Rules
By entering the Contest each entrant agrees to abide by these Contest rules, the decisions of MEDA with respect to this Contest are final and binding on all entrants without right of appeal.
MEDA reserves the right to cancel, withdraw or amend this Contest in any way without prior notice or obligation in the event of any error, technical problem, computer virus, bugs, fraud, or any other cause beyond the reasonable control of MEDA that interferes with the proper conduct of this Contest as contemplated by these Contest Rules
