La Casa Encendida and Fulgencio Pimentel present the seventh edition of the Puchi Award.
Puchi Award is open to the most unique book proposals in the field of comics and illustrated books, as well as any hybrid projects.
Puchi Award launches its next call for applications with a renewed approach, eminently graphic, and a biennial periodicity, also increasing its financial endowment to 10,000 euros.
Puchi Award is aimed at audacious projects with their own personality and evident artistic interest, in which images play a principal role, never an accessory or complementary one, in the narrative or exhibition development of the work.
Who can participate
Any natural person of legal age, of any nationality, with an original and unpublished work may participate.
Date
The deadline for submitting projects runs from 17 September 2024 to 27 February 2024 at 14:00h (GMT+1), inclusive. No submissions will be accepted after the deadline.
Prizes
The winner will receive a prize of 10.000€ (VAT and other taxes included, as an advance payment for the publishing rights of the work) plus the publication of the work, which will be distributed by Fulgencio Pimentel.
Exceptionally, a Special Jury Prize may be awarded, which will involve the publication and distribution of the winning project.
Requirements
Projects must be submitted using the form available at La Casa Encendida’s website.
Only finished works may be submitted, which must be unpublished or, at least, have been published in a limited way, without ISBN or commercial distribution.
Works with graphic elements may be submitted: comics or illustrated albums. There will be no restrictions on length or format.
Fulgencio Pimentel and La Casa Encendida reserve the final word on the design and production characteristics of the final edition of the winning project. Projects must be accompanied by either a pseudonym or the real name of the author (or authors, in the case of collaborative works).
Each application must be accompanied by:
– Completed online application form.
– Curriculum Vitae of all authors.
– National identity card, residence card or passport.
– Descriptive text of the work and motivation (maximum 1,000 characters including spaces).
– Biography (maximum 1,000 characters including spaces).
– Portfolio (maximum 20 pages PDF format).
– Complete final work in its original language (PDF).
– Extract translated into English of at least two pages (PDF).
Projects may be written in any language, although a provisional English translation of at least two pages of the work must be provided. In addition, the application form, curriculum vitae, descriptive text of the work and motivation, and production requirements must be submitted in English or Spanish.
The formats of the materials that can be uploaded to the website are:
– PDF with a maximum weight of 15 MB.
Works submitted without observing these conditions will be disqualified by the jury.
Publication
The winner grants the publishers, on an exclusive basis, all the exploitation rights over the work, including the rights of reproduction, distribution, public communication and transformation for a period of 10 years throughout the world. Receipt of the prize is subject to the completion and publication of the winning project. In the event of failure by the winner to deliver the finished project on the dates agreed by both parties, the full amount may be claimed by the organisers. The winner will be entitled to receive 25 copies of the work. The publishers may exercise the exploitation of the rights to the winning work directly themselves or enter into agreements with third parties, on an exclusive or non-exclusive basis, as may be necessary to enable the best possible execution and use of the rights and in the various forms abroad.
The prize awarded to the author is in the nature of a royalty advance, so that the author will not receive any additional income from the sales of the original edition of the work until the sales of the original edition of the work reach the total amount corresponding to the prize received.
This condition applies only to sales of the original edition. In the case of any publishing agreements with publishers in third countries, the author will receive royalties in accordance with the terms of those agreements, regardless of whether or not the advance received has been amortised by sales of the original edition.
Jury
Fulgencio Pimentel and La Casa Encendida will appoint a reading panel, which will select the 10 shortlisted works to be judged by a jury of recognised prestige. The number of shortlisted works may be increased if the reading panel, in view of the quality of the works presented, deems it appropriate. The jury will be made up of two personalities from the world of publishing and culture, a representative of La Casa Encendida and a representative of the Fulgencio Pimentel publishing house. The jury’s decision will be final and may be declared void. All the documentation sent, except that of the winner, will be destroyed and no correspondence will be maintained with the authors who present themselves for the award. Participation in the Puchi Award implies full acceptance of its rules.
Dissemination
The registration of the works submitted in the Intellectual Property Register is the responsibility of the author, as well as the effects of their non-registration with regard to third parties from the moment of submission of the work to the competition.
The mere submission to the call for entries represents the acceptance and knowledge of these rules.
Upon completion of the project, and its dissemination, it will be stated that it has been made possible thanks to the help of the two collaborating entities: La Casa Encendida and Fulgencio Pimentel.
Confidentiality
The confidentiality of the documentation provided in the call for proposals and compliance with the provisions of LO 15/1999, of 13 December, regulating the protection of personal data is guaranteed for the data provided and falling within the scope of application of the aforementioned Law.
